Here’s a product that should need no introduction…basically because I’ve covered all that in a previous review for a different flavor. So I’ll spare you all a long lecture and jump right into this one.
The texture of these are exactly what I expected having tried another flavor in the “Stackerz” line: They’re way too thick and irredeemably grainy, offering up an experience that’s nothing at all like the national brand, whose name rhymes with “shingles”. They’re not even on par with “Stax”, the other major brand of “potato crisp” from a different large chip company; it itself being a second-rate knockoff of the original.
But, alas, they have survived for five years on Aldi shelves, so there must be a reason. Flavor, perhaps?
Nope, not even close. This really has no discernable sour cream and onion flavor, at least at first. It’s just kind of a salty mess, with slight hints of the “coolness” of sour cream peeking through, and that’s about it. I must admit that the taste becomes a little more pronounced the more you eat in one sitting, but considering most people are going to give up after a max of two, that doesn’t really help. And even then, it’s still not a “good” sour cream and onion flavor, so it’s not even worth the attempt.
Coming in at a little over a dollar, value is scarce, considering the “Stax” knockoffs can be routinely had for $1 each on sale, and the name brand is only a quarter or two more than these.
Honestly, these are among the worst products inside Aldi stores. They taste like a throwback to when I started shopping there (way back in 2005!) and the products were truly hit-or-miss, with a much wider gap in quality than now. How they’re still being offered for sale is truly mind-boggling…they should have been ripped off store shelves years ago. Hell, even the cans look depressing, with washed-out colors and an unattractive design that virtually begs you not to buy them.
“Once you pop, you’ll easily stop,” would be a good slogan, based off the national brand’s; or, “Stop! Don’t pop!”; or, “Once you pop, you’ll never pop again.” I think you get the idea.
Overall: 1/10. I don’t know why I’m even giving these a “1”, because they’re irredeemably bad. They are thicker than the name brand, with a grainy consistency, and have a flavor that won’t satisfy anyone looking for a sour cream and onion product, period. There’s just not enough seasoning to generously cover the chip, meaning the chip itself is the strongest flavor. Even if there were no name brands to compare them to, these would still be shit. Spend a couple quarters more on the name brand, or even the “Stax” potato crisps, which are already B-grade knockoffs from a different large chip company.
